The term "radiation" embraces a wide range of phenomena. The two types of radiation are ionising and non ionising radiation. The type of radiation depends on wave length and frequency, which determines its position on the electromagnetic spectrum. Both ionising and non ionising radiation can cause effects on health. Sometimes these effects are profound and in some cases fatal. There is a range of legislation that set the standards to control radiation safety including the Ionising Radiations Regulations 1999, the Control of Artificial Optical Radiation at Work Regulations 2010 and the Electromagnetic Fields Directive.
JRL Solutions Ltd provides a one day course for managers and others interested in radiation safety to help them meet their responsibilities under legislation.
The syllabus includes:-
- distinction between types of radiation
- possible health effects
- the physics of radiation
- the causes of ill health
- standards to be applied
- control methods
