Over recent times there has been an increase in health and safety legislation leading to more regulatory control over the activities of organisations. However, people have continued to be injured or killed at work or suffered ill health due to work. The failure of organisations to implement good standards of health and safety can have devastating results such as loss of reputation, customer dissatisfaction, increase in insurance premiums, crippling compensation claims and enforcement action, leading to possible imprisonment and large fines. These factors impact adversely on profitability, customer perception, company image and decrease in market share, which can lead to business failure.
