Consultation is seeking the views and opinions of others to assist in the making of good decisions. Good consultation leads to better health and safety as it is an ingredient of health and safety culture. There is a range of legislation which addresses and sets the standards for consultation including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (as amended), the Safety Representatives and Committees Regulations 1977 the Health and Safety (Consultation with Employees) Regulations 1996 and the Information and Consultation of Employees Regulations 2004. Both employees who are members of trade unions and employees who are not members of trade unions are entitled to consultation.
